Step #1: Identify the problem.
The First and major step is to identify a problem to be solved.
This may sound simple but most people usually get stuck at this point.
An entrepreneur is always on lookout for potential problems in their surrounding which they can solve and monetize. Have you identified a problem yet? If your answer is yes, continue reading. If you haven’t identified a problem yet, pause reading and resume when you decide on your problem.
Describe your problem in short and clear terms in order to have a clear picture of what the problem is about. Writing this down is advised as you can always relate to your scripts for easy interpretation. Are you convinced that your problem can be profitable? Step 2: Reverse The Problem
As stated before, we are using the problem reversal technique to develop creative profitable ideas to solve potentially profitable problems.
As an example in step 1, we have noticed that there is no enough food in Ondangwa. We must reverse our problem to ‘there is enough food in Ondangwa.’
With our reversed problem, we have to think of better ways to arrive at our reversed problem. How do we solve the lack of food in Ondangwa?
By solving this, we will have more food in Ondangwa for everyone. This is your end goal, to make sure there is abundant food available for everyone.
- importing food from other towns and resell it
- training residents to grow their own food
- start up a farm, etc.

You have just solved your problem. The possible ideas you came up with are all possible solutions to your problem.
NB: Do not rush through this process. Take at least 24 hours just to make sure you have enough ideas at hand.
Step 4: Idea Evaluation
You are not just going to select any random solution from your possible ideas listing. You have to thoroughly evaluate each idea by stating down its advantages and disadvantages. Your evaluations should be detailed for a better analysis for in order to select the best idea amongst others.
Step 5: Final Idea Selection
Thank you once more for making it this far. I am happy to know that you are finally convinced that developing creative ideas is not that scary as you thought it might be.
After a thorough evaluation and analysis of every possible idea, you have to select the best idea that is feasible and most profitable. This means you must select the idea with the least drawbacks and also affordable to pursue. In most cases, ideas which are environmentally safe are usually preferable. Choose the idea that best suits you and which you are comfortable to work on.

Step 6: Action plan
This is the last and critical step in the creative idea generation process. Being creative does not only comprise of coming up with better solutions, it also involve taking action and making the solution a reality, not just an idea. This step graduates you from not only being a thinker but also a doer.
In the action plan, you plan on how you will implement the chosen idea.
- Break down your idea into simple small manageable parts if it is too complex.
- Calculate and evaluate your start-up capital required.
- What is your source of capital?
- Do you need employees? How many employees and their expertise?
- How will your target market get to know about your products or service?
- What are the legal rules to abide to? Make sure you are well informed about the different bodies you have to register with to secure your potential enterprise.
